El grunge comenzó con las bandas de Seattle del sello Sub Pop, y Nirvana fué la primera banda en denominársele con el término. Éste movimiento (porque después de todo eran unos activistas) o género se caracterizó por traer a la escena internacional varias tragedias, cuando lo que en realidad querían era alejarse lo posible de los medios. Layne Staley y Kurt Cobain terminaron haciendo escándalo con su muerte cuando Eddie Vedder prefirió seguir brindándonos buenos albums, buenas historias, buenos videos, por lo que la gente piensa que Pearl Jam fué la causa de comercialización del género, lo que a mi parecer es una ironía no fijarse en cuanto dinero le sacó Courtney Love a la muerte de Kurt; aparte, la calidad de músicos de Pearl Jam no se compara ni en lo mínimo con muchas otras dentro del movimiento.
